Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars, known for being the winery that won the Cabernet Sauvignon competition in the famous 1976 Judgment of Paris, was founded in 1970, and is considered a Napa Valley first-growth estate.

PUTTING NAPA VALLEY ON THE MAP: THE 1976 JUDGEMENT OF PARIS

The 1976 Paris Tasting had a revolutionary effect and changed the world’s view of California wines forever. Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars won a blind taste test among some of the best-known French wines and instantly became a notorious brand. By beating out esteemed French wines, Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars earned the classification of one of the first-growth estates in California. Additionally, the iconic 1973 S.L.V. Cabernet Sauvignon was named one of the Smithsonian's "Objects that Made America" in 2013.

CELEBRATING HISTORY, CONTINUING A LEGACY

Stag’s Leap Cellars winemaking philosophy is to create wines of classic beauty – with balance, complexity, and harmony. This style can only be achieved through an extreme attention to detail found among the world’s best and most dedicated wine producers.

AN “IRON FIST IN A VELVET GLOVE”

The style of Cabernet produced by Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars has often been described as “an iron fist in a velvet glove,” a reference to the artful balance between ripeness and restraint, softness and structure, that yields Napa Valley wines of exceptional beauty and long life.

Course volcanic soil and cool coastal temperatures are factors that result in wines that display not just richness, but vibrant acidity and soft tannins. Especially when young, Cabernet Sauvignon from the Stag’s Leap District is more approachable than other Napa Valley wines.

As head winemaker at Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars, Marcus Notaro manages the winemaking process from grape to bottle, working with vineyard managers and growers, overseeing winemaking regimes, and carrying out blending trials.

A SUSTAINABLE APPROACH

The Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars vineyards are located in the Stag’s Leap District in Napa Valley – a viticultural area, also named for the popular local legend of a stag eluding hunters by leaping to freedom across the district’s landmark peaks. Their dedication to producing the best quality wines includes a steadfast commitment to sustainable practices in the winery and the vineyards.
