
Freemark Abbey, a historic 1886 winery and pristine estate, features a team of some of the most respected winemakers in Napa Valley. Their extensive wine library stretches back decades and includes nearly 50 Cabernet Sauvignon vintages from the region. And women are a key part of the winery’s story: a pioneering, unstoppable woman founded the property 135 year ago, and today an equally unique and determined woman is taking charge.
Today, Freemark Abbey’s winemaker, Kristy Melton, brings over a decade of experience and was featured in Wine Enthusiast magazine’s “Top 40 under 40 Tastemakers.” This recognition of her talents, along with her formidable winemaking skills, has set the stage for a promising future at the winery.
The roots of Freemark Abbey began with Josephine Tychson, one of the first ladies of the California wine industry. With her husband, she purchased nearly 150 acres of property just north of St. Helena, where they planted Zinfandel, Riesling, and Burgundy vines to establish their winery. After her husband passed away five years later, Josephine continued to cultivate the land and constructed a redwood cellar – becoming the first woman to own and operate a viticultural estate, and one of the first female winemakers in the Napa Valley. Her trailblazing vision was much like our founder, Ruth Fertel, who risked it all to buy a small steak house in New Orleans.
